OUR HISTORY
After a disastrous fire on Bank Street Road without any responding fire apparatus, Leo Dorman decided it was time ​for the Town of Batavia to have its own fire company.
Under the leadership of Leo Dorman and Jack Holt, the
company was formed. On March 30, 1948,
the first meeting of the new company was held.
The proposed by-laws were read and adopted.
Jack Holt was elected temporary chairman.
Election of officers followed with the following
were elected to serve as the first officers:
Chief: Jack Ahl
President: Warren Hawley
Captain: David Barrett Vice President - Leo Geitner
Lieutenant: Lester Dunham Secretary David Patterson
Treasurer: Earl Dorman
Directors - 2 years: Leo Dorman and Jack Holt
Directors 1 year: James Dunham, Bert Harloff, Donald Weller
Historian: W.P.K. White
Eighty-three members attended the second meeting on April 27, 1948. At this meeting, the first truck was ​purchased, and it was voted to incorporate the Department. Until station No. 1 was built in 1951, the meetings were ​held in the Town Board rooms, and the truck was kept in the Town Garage. Money to finance the Department has ​come from dues, contributions, carnivals, Town Contracts, bingo, and numerous other fundraisers.
The most significant contribution to the company's progress has been the dedication and support from all the men ​and women in the Department and in the community. One cannot speak about the department's history without ​emphasizing the enormous number of hours spent in training to develop the efficient fire fighting department we ​have. The Town of Batavia Fire Department will meet any challenge that may surface and will continue to be one of ​the best-trained and equipped fire companies in the county.
